On Thursday 12th May, Bexhill A team travelled to East Grinstead Bookshop to play the final league match of the season. The result of the match would determine whether Bexhill would finish 2nd or 4th. If we won or drew we would finish 2nd , but a loss would drop us to 4th.
Steve Blewitt the captain on the night reported that at one stage in the match a win seemed to be on the cards as Andrew on board 1 seemed to be in control of his game, Steve on 2 was also in a good position as was Janis on 3 and Leo on 4 looked as though he would do no worse than a draw.
However things can change quickly and by the end Steve had made an error and lost a piece and his game.
Leo played well and got a draw, Janis continued his excellent season and won, Andrew claimed a draw and thus the final score was a 2 all draw.
This meant that Bexhill A finished 2nd in the league by the smallest of margins, just 1 game point.
This represents an excellent season for Bexhill, as it is the first time that we have had two teams in the league and to finish ahead of some strong clubs is very pleasing.
I would like to thank the following members who have played for the A team this season Andrew Fleming, Steve Blewitt, Janis Petersons, John Kimber, Derek Cosens, Steve Merchant, Leo Woning and Bill Tracey.
Hopefully by finishing 2nd we will be placed in division 2 of 3 when the leagues start again in October.
