Bexhill defeat Crowborough to go through to the next round of the Watson trophy

Match report from Bill Tracey for Bexhill vs Crowborough in The Watson Trophy.

On Friday 13th December, Bexhill played in The Watson Trophy at home vs Crowborough.

Our team, in board order, was Andy, Janis, James and Lawry.

Janis was first to finish with a solid draw.

James then put us in a very strong position by, yet again, playing very well for a win.

Lawry and his opponent played a long well matched game. In the end game Lawry was up three pawns to two but with Bishops of opposite colours a draw was the final outcome.

Andy on board 1 just needed a draw but pushed hard for the win and was eventually rewarded with a fine win.

Final score Bexhill 3 Crowborough 1

Bexhill will now play Uckfield in the quarter final and if we win will then play our other team in the semi final.

Hastings 2 vs Bexhill 3

Match report from Bill Tracey.

On Tuesday 10th December our 3rd team travelled to Hastings to take on their 2nd team.

Our team, in board order was Luke, Bill L, Ed and myself.

First to finish was Ed. Playing an opponent who out rated him by 130 points Ed navigated both the opening and middle game to go into an equal looking end game. Ed then out played his opponent to secure a fine win.

Bill finished next. Unfortunately despite fighting hard Bill eventually had to concede against a much higher rated opponent.

I finished next. After a very interesting game where I ended up with 2 bishops and 6 pawns to my opponents 2 knights and 6 pawns we agreed a draw as neither of us could find a way to make progress. I was happy enough with the draw as he out rated me by almost 150 points.

Luke on board 1 was in a close battle when his opponent offered a draw. Luke thought for awhile and
knowing that a draw would mean a match draw he accepted the offer.

This was an excellent result for our 3rd team as we were playing against a very strong team who are currently placed 2nd in the League.

Bexhill 2 vs Eastbourne 2

Here is the match report for Bexhill 2nd team V Eastbourne 2nd team from Bill Tracey.

On Friday 6th December Bexhill 2 hosted Eastbourne 2 in The Sussex League Division 2.

Our team, in board order was Luke, James, Janis and Leo.

First to finish was James who set a trap for his opponent who fell for it. As a result his opponent saw that his position was hopeless and he resigned.

Luke was next to finish. He appeared to be in a better position, when, his opponent failed to spot that Luke was about to pin his queen to his rook. His opponent gave up his Queen for a Rook, but he resigned soon afterwards.

Leo on 4 had a very strong looking attack but unfortunately was not able to find a way to complete it and his opponent found a strong counter attack. Eventually Leo had to resign.

Janis’s match gradually turned into a classic. It seemed to the onlookers that all was lost for Janis as his opponent had two connected passed pawns on the 5th and 6th ranks. Janis however found some wonderful resources and fought back brilliantly. When the match time limit of 3 hours and 10 minutes ran out the two players agreed a draw.

So the final result was 2.5 to 1.5 in favour of Bexhill.

This means that Bexhill 2 are now top of the second division and undefeated after 4 matches.
