Away at Haywards Heath this Thursday, Bill had a very hard-fought game against a highly talented junior. Post-mortem computer analysis showed that Bill had a better position throughout, reaching a same -coloured bishops and pawns endgame. The analysis showed if Bill had found one resource which would have won the passed pawn race, the point would have been his. However, he missed it and his opponent was able to push his pawn through first and take the game..

Lawry had a good win in fairly short order against an opponent who may have been off the grid for sometime but with seemingly a substantial rating. His opponent misplayed the opening stages and allowed Black space and time to attack the castled King’s position, with a tactic to shatter the fianchetto with …Nxf2 without material loss, which led to a quick mate.

Michael’s result was hard to accept as he had successfully defended against a sacrifice ..Bxh2+ ( in the style of a Greek Gift) and Black was left with just Q and R . But due to his exposed King, Michael was running down his clock somewhat faster than his opponent, who kept finding ways to threaten the King and chase the extra N , and the unforgiving flag fell.

Geoffrey apparently had an advantage out of the opening but lost material at a later stage.

It was a match result that could easily have gone a different way.
